Chloe Smith quizzes ministers on cyber security

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 10 December 2015 10:01

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, today quizzes Cabinet Office ministers in Parliament on cyber security.

In Cabinet Office oral questions, just before PMQs, she will ask what plans ministers have to improve cooperation between government departments on the use of digital technology.

She will argue that government departments must work together to enable people to use digital technology safely and efficiently across government services, but also that they must work together to meet the demand for increased cyber security, including by engaging citizens and businesses.

Chloe is a former minister for the National Cyber Security Programme in 2012-13.  That programme has received extra funding in the Autumn Statement and Spending Review this month.

Chloe has recently co-authored an article with Vice Chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts on cyber skills: http://chloesmith.org.uk/local/news/these-skills-should-be-harnessed-before-they-do-harm.

She has urged local firms to check their cyber security following a minor hack on Norwich Airport's website: http://chloesmith.org.uk/local/news/chloe-smith-urges-norwich-firms-to-check-their-cyber-security.  She will continue to work with local firms into 2016.

She says:

"The daily security online of our citizens, our economy and our country is hugely important.  We expect the highest standards of security but this requires government, people and businesses to work together.

"Cyber skills are crucial and Norwich firms can act to be sure that their security is enough to protect themselves and their customers, before it is challenged.  They can also look to take on amazing young talent to help.  Simple advice is available for companies large and small to make sure they are keeping a step ahead of people who would do harm."
