Urgent care plan announcement

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 30 January 2023 11:59

Too many constituents are waiting too long in A&E or for ambulances. So today I am pleased to see the Government announce a plan to fix A&E and ambulance waiting times.

The NHS is facing serious challenges as a result of the Covid pandemic and the worst 'flu season for over a decade. We saw the highest ever number of people attending A&E in December, which combined with high hospital occupancy rates means some patients are facing unacceptable delays.

The Prime Minister is determined to deliver on his promise to prioritise the NHS and cut waiting lists, with one of the fastest improvements in emergency waiting times in the history of the NHS, making sure people get the care they need easier, faster, and closer to home.

The Urgent and Emergency Care Recovery Plan will seek to:

  • Increase bed spaces with £1 million more for beds and 800 new ambulances, supported by more staff
  • Reduce pressure on hospitals by speeding up discharge; expanding new, innovative measures to treat patients safely in the community; and enhancing the role of NHS 111
  • Improving local A&E services by sharing and promoting best practice, so no matter where you live, you can get the care you need.

The NNUH in Norwich has experienced higher rates of admission for Covid and flu this winter, and when I met with the Chief Executive earlier this month, I was re-assured by the positive actions taken to manage those winter pressures. I welcome the Urgent and Emergency Care Recovery Plan so that my constituents can benefit from reduced waiting times and a better patient experience here in Norwich.
