Chloe Smith MP seeks Government funds to boost Norwich’s flood defences

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 05 March 2015 09:44

During the serious flooding that hit Norwich last summer, Chloe helped dozens of constituents as they struggled to deal with the severe  damage to their homes. Since then, Chloe has been working with the local Council to secure works to reduce the risk of future occurrences.

Following the results of Norfolk County Council’s flooding investigation report, Chloe has supported the Council’s bid for funding to the Department for Transport’s Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund Challenge to help upgrade key drainage infrastructure across the Norwich urban growth zone – including areas in Hellesdon, Sprowston, Old Catton and Thorpe St Andrew, all hit by the flooding.

More broadly, this work, alongside other infrastructure investment, is key to Chloe’s six-point plan for Norwich, helping to deliver economic growth and prosperity to the city.

Chloe commented:

“I have been in contact with dozens of my constituents who have experienced serious problems with flooding. They suffered extensive damage to their homes and businesses after the extreme rainfall last summer, and have spent a huge amount of time, effort and money trying to rebuild.

“I fully support Norfolk County Council in their bid for funds through the Department for Transport Challenge Fund for the Greater Norwich Area Surface Water Drainage scheme. I have contacted the Secretary of State to make the strongest possible argument for the funds.

“In particular, I welcome this opportunity to improve the resilience of the drainage system in the face of more frequent flash flooding events.  This is an important priority for residents and businesses, especially those affected by the recent and serious surface water flooding.

“As well as helping to reduce the misery and disruption caused by flooding, I consider this investment to be part of a crucial strategy to bring further economic growth to Norwich.”
