Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 11 August 2020 10:49

Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North, has responded to figures released by the Office of National Statistics today, which show that Norwich North's rate of unemployment remains better than the national average.

There were 3,480 claimants in Norwich North constituency in July 2020,  which was 6.3% of the population aged 16-64. The equivalent UK claimant rate was 6.4%. This was 1,905 higher than March, before the lockdown began.

The figures released have shown that amongst people aged 16-64, known as the economically active population, in the East of England 3.8% were unemployed, which is also lower than the national average of at 3.9%.

Nationally, the new figures show employment decreased by 220,000 on the quarter, said the Office for National Statistics. The figures show that the youngest workers, oldest workers and those in manual occupations were the worst hit during the pandemic.

Chloe, who has recently published an article entitled A Fair Recovery for Young and Old?, drawing on her experience helping young people in Norwich, comments:   "Today’s jobs figures are worrying including for young people looking for work. That’s why the Chancellor has acted. I want more good jobs in Norwich.  The Norwich For Jobs project will continue to help Norwich young people find a chance. We encourage local firms to get involved and use the new schemes."
