Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, has welcomed new figures showing 33% fewer people in Norwich North claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance compared to last November. This means more people with the self-respect and security of a good job and a pay packet this Christmas.

The number of young people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Norwich North has fallen by even more in the same time – 37%.

In the country overall there are now a record 30.80 million people in work, with 1.75 million more people in work since 2010.

Chloe, who founded and leads the Norwich For Jobs campaign which has helped many Norwich young people into work in the last two years, said:

“It’s great news that 1,000 fewer people in north Norwich are relying on Jobseeker’s Allowance to get by. This is a clear sign that the Conservatives' long-term economic plan is working – helping people get off benefits and into work.

“This is happening because we’ve been backing businesses to create more jobs with lower taxes and better infrastructure, and fixing the welfare system to make sure work pays. We’ve been particularly seeing this locally with new jobs across Norwich thanks to the businesses who have pledged opportunities through Norwich For Jobs.

“But these aren’t just numbers. This means a better future for families in Norwich, as more people have the financial security and self-respect that comes with a good job and a regular pay-packet.”
