Britannia Cafe visit 29.03.14

The Right Honourable Francis Maude MP on Saturday 29th March 2014 was hosted on a visit to Norwich North by Chloe Smith MP.

Francis Maude joined Chloe at a meeting with Jessica Oghenegweke, student of Thorpe St. Andrew High School, newly elected Member of Youth Parliament for Norwich North and NCS Leader at Cafe Britannia on Britannia Road.

Jessica is one of a hundred 16 and 17 year olds who have been selected to be an NCS Leader by the National Citizenship Service, as a part of her role as an NCS leader, Jessica undertook a project to refurbish the Open Youth Venue in Norwich.

Chloe and Francis Maude also met with Davina Tanner, Manager of Cafe Britannia and the Deputy Governor of HMP Norwich and learned more about the cafe, which is staffed by inmates of Norwich Prison; offering them an opportunity to gain work experience and qualifications before their release.

Chloe comments: "Cafe Britannia is a roaring success and deserves recognition at the highest level as a superb social enterprise. Francis Maude, who has responsibility to the Prime Minister for government's support to charity and social enterprise, was very impressed. Davina Tanner and the team deserve all credit. I popped back for more tea on Mother's Day and this beauty spot in north Norwich was doing amazing trade. That all helps show prisoners what enterprise means.

"I also wanted to introduce Francis to the success of young people like Jessica who lead the National Citizenship Service. The Prime Minister ought to hear direct how brilliant Norwich teenagers really are."
