Visit to Norwich Guide Dog forum

It was a pleasure to be invited as a guest to Norwich Guide Dog Forum to learn about the challenges to their members and to discuss the issues and concerns of people living with sight loss, including this year with coronavirus.

A whole range of issues were discussed, including how people living with visual impairments are using the COVID-19 home testing kit, the isolation that some have been experiencing during lockdown, the streetscape around Norwich, and the e-scooter pilot currently happening in the city.

I found it an extremely valuable meeting to hear about the issues and challenges facing people with visual impairments firsthand. As one of the members pointed out to me, the effects of sight impairment are wide ranging and unique to each individual.

I am aware that Guide Dogs UK published guidance on getting around safely during the Covid-19 outbreak on its website, including while food shopping, and further support can also be sought through the organisations Covid-19 Sight Loss information line on 0800 781 1444.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) also has useful information about coming to terms with sight loss.  The RNIB's helpline is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm. The number is 0303 123 9999. You can also email helpline staff (helpline@rnib.org.uk).

Locally, Vision Norfolk supports people living with sight loss and visual impairment, providing daily support in the community, at centres in Norwich, King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth, as well as specialist housing, helping those affected by sight loss to live life fully.
