Update for Norwich North: New guidance on staying safe with friends and family

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 25 June 2020 09:37

Due to the commitment of everyone here in Norwich, and across the country, the Prime Minister has announced that from 4th July we will be able to see more of our friends and family.

It has been hard to see normal life put on hold. I am hugely grateful to everyone who has made sacrifices which helped to get through the worst of the pandemic.

It is fantastic that we can see more friends and family, but we should all continue to follow social distancing guidelines to keep coronavirus under control. I am sure most people will use common sense and take personal responsibility, including by keeping on washing hands, staying 2 metres apart wherever feasible, and reducing the risks at 1 metre where necessary.

Additionally, we should all continue to:

  • Avoid public transport when possible, and wear a mask when not;
  • Get tested and self isolate immediately if we develop symptoms of coronavirus (a new cough, a fever or loss of taste or smell);
  • Self-isolate if instructed to by NHS Test and Trace.

From 4th July, groups of up to two households can meet in any location - public or private, indoors or outdoors. However, social distancing guidelines still apply to anyone who isn't normally a member of your household.

Couples in Norwich can also have their wedding or civil partnership ceremony. You should only invite close friends and family, up to a maximum of 30 people.  You can also now stay overnight away from your home.

Pubs, restaurants and hairdressers will be reopening. When eating or drinking out with people you do not live with (and who are not in your support bubble), guidance on group sizes applies: up to two households indoors, and up to either two households or six people from more than two households outdoors.

Some leisure facilities and tourist attractions may also open, if they can do so safely.

To support this cautious transition the Government has published detailed guidance.  You can read full guidelines on how to stay safe outside your home here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-safe-outside-your-home/staying-safe-outside-your-home

This is welcome news to all of us who want to see more normal life and livelihoods return.  Again, thank you for all your perseverance and please take the confidence to go out to safely support the local economy and community here in Norwich.
