The Medicines and Medical Devices Bill – Reporting Back

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 03 March 2020 10:03

Yesterday Parliament voted on the second reading of the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill. The NHS is crucial to so many of us here in Norwich North so I wanted to take the time to update you on what this Bill will mean for our NHS.

This Bill forms part of the Government’s plans to empower NHS workers and deliver the best outcomes for patients across the country and locally here in Norwich.

What will this strangely named Bill do? It will give hospitals new powers to develop cutting-edge personalised treatments for patients with rare cancers and brain tumours. It will also empower a greater range of medical professionals to prescribe low-risk medicines to relieve pressure on GPs.

This Bill comes alongside a record £33.9bn investment coming to the NHS. This additional funding will be enshrined into law when the NHS Funding Bill 2019-21 receives Royal Assent over the coming weeks.

On Friday (28th February) I met with the Chief Executive of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) to talk about how all interested parties can work together to improve our local NHS and the NNUH A&E department.

Leading on from my visit to the NNUH, this week in Parliament I will be attending a meeting with theleadership of the Norfolk and Waveney Health and Care Partnership to discuss how the different bits of the NHSin Norfolk can work together better.

As the MP for Norwich North I will continue to work for a better local NHS here in Norwich. I will support measures in Parliament such as the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill, which will bring direct benefit for so many of my constituents.
