The local rate of unemployment remains better than the national average

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 15 February 2022 14:07

Figures released today show that the number of payrolled employees in the UK rose by 108,000 in January – showing that the Plan for Jobs is working both locally and nationally.

As the country Builds Back Better, the priority is to getting people into good, high skilled jobs, which helping businesses to thrive.

The latest figures show that the number of payroll employees rose by 108,000 in January and now stands at 436,000 above pre-pandemic levels – with the unemployment rate falling by 0.2 between October and December.

What does this mean in local terms?

  • Last month, there were 2,195 actual claimants in Norwich North constituency in January 2022 seeking support, which was 4% of the population aged 16-64. The equivalent national claimant rate was 4.3%. This shows that Norwich has a higher employment rate than the national average.

  • The figure of 2,195 was 55 lower than December 2021 and 620 higher than March 2020, before the first lockdown began. It is worth noting that much of this increase happened in March-May 2020 at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

  • There were 370 claimants aged 18-24 in January 2022, 40 lower than December 2021 and 20 higher than March 2020. This was 5.4% of the population aged 18-24, compared to 5% nationally.

This shows that the Plan for Jobs is working - bringing economic security for workers and greater prosperity to Norwich. Ensuring Norwich has more good jobs is one of my key local priorities, and I welcome these new statistics. I will continue working to encourage more good jobs to our city. You can find out more about my work here: https://www.chloesmith.org.uk/myplan/
