Tackling the cost of living in north Norwich

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 12 August 2022 13:34

Amid the rising cost of living, I have been keeping constituents up to date on my website with information and help that the Government is providing to help tackle rising energy prices and food costs exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and coupled with rising global inflation. Yesterday, the the Prime Minister, Chancellor and Business Secretary hosted a roundtable with electricity generators as the Government continues work with the business sector to tackle the cost of living challenge that we face both here in Norwich and across the UK.  In the face of global inflationary pressures, the Government and I remain committed to helping local families here in north Norwich with rising energy and food costs and are looking at other ways to help.  Over the coming months, the Government is continuing to roll out support, including the second £324 instalment of the cost of living payment for vulnerable households, extra help for pensioners and those with disabilities, and the £400 energy bills discount for all households. The Government has already taken a number of steps to mitigate the impact of the global spike in energy prices on the most vulnerable which include allocating £37 billion of help for households including the direct £400 discount on energy bills and £1200 of direct support to help with the cost of living.

Locally, residents in north Norwich who require further support can look at support being offered through the Household Support Fund and administered through Norfolk County Council here

The Money Support Service is also a vital service to help residents with budgeting and their service can be accessed here.

Norfolk Citizen's Advice Bureau also runs a service called Debt Advice Norfolk to look at your spending and offer support with managing your budget and for local residents who are vulnerable or have complex needs, you can seek specialised support from Norfolk Community Law Service's Debt Advice team.

I know that this winter will be a particular challenge and that this year local residents are already feeling the squeeze of rising fuel costs and that the Government is doing everything it can to coordinate and prepare partners and industry for the coming months.
