Queens Speech: Ensuring we have the homes Norwich needs

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 11 May 2022 14:41

I welcome the new housing Bills announced in the Queen's Speech for the upcoming Parliamentary session.

The Government's Renters Reform Bill will create a rental market that is fairer and more effective for both tenants and landlords.

The Bill will abolish 'no fault evictions' which will provide security for tenants in the private rented sector, empowering them to challenge poor practice and unfair rent increases without fear of retaliatory eviction. The Bill will deliver a better deal for renters through reforms that will provide 4.4 million households with more secure and higher quality homes, providing a more stable rental market.

It will also introduce stronger possession grounds for landlords,  introducing new and stronger grounds for repeated incidences of rent arrears and reducing notice periods for anti-social behaviour, ensuring that they can regain their property efficiently when needed.

Alongside this, the Government will work to improve tenants' rights through the Social Housing Regulation Bill. The Bill will work to ensure better quality, safer homes through strengthening the Social Housing Regulator, ensuring the body can better stand up for tenants and protect them from unsafe homes. This will enable issues to be resolved faster for tenants, with stronger powers to issue fines, intervene in mismanagement, and powers to complete emergency repairs.

I welcome these housing Bills, which I am confident will further contribute towards ensuring we have the homes Norwich needs, which is one of my key local priorities I have set out for constituents.
