Figures released today by the Office of National Statistics show that the number of UK workers on payrolls rose by 73,000 between June and July to 29.7 million.

Despite the UK employment rate for people aged 16 to 64 years decreasing by 0.1 percentage points on the quarter to 75.5%, it is still below pre-pandemic levels and the number of people in employment aged 16 years and over increased on the quarter by 160,000. Today's figures show that the number of full-time employees increased during the last three-month period.

Locally, there were 1,830 actual claimants in Norwich North constituency, which was 3.3% of the population aged 16-64, compared to a national rate of 3.7%. These figures for the claimant count show the number of people who were claiming unemployment-related benefits. This includes those who were claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or were claiming Universal Credit and are required to seek work. This shows that people in Norwich are more likely to be in employment than the national average across the whole country.

Over the past year the number of claimants has fallen by 860 in North Norwich. This is likely to mean more people are in work which is really important at a time when the cost of living is high for households.
