New taskforce to level-up maternity care and tackle disparities

Today, the Government has launched a new Maternity Disparities Taskforce, which will help level up maternity care across the UK to improve outcomes for women from deprived areas or ethnic minority backgrounds.

For too long, women living in deprived areas or from ethnic monitory backgrounds are less likely to get the care they need – and even worse, are more likely to lose their child.

That is why the Government has launched a new Maternity Disparities Taskforce, which will bring together experts to understand and address the causes behind these issues so to make the NHS one of the best places in the world to be pregnant.

The Taskforce will deliver real and ambitious change to improve care for all women, building on the £95 million recruitment drive to hire 1,200 more midwives and 100 obstetricians as we level up maternity care across the UK.

Finally, on a local level, I was particularly pleased to see that The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital received good results on their approach to maternity services, in a survey conducted by the Care Quality Commission. The results of the survey showed that most patients cared for during their pregnancies felt respected and had confidence and trust in those providing that care.
