New figures reveal the largest fall in unemployment since 1974

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 17 May 2022 10:30

Figures released this morning by the Office of National Statistics reveal that the number of people on payroll rose by 121,000 between March and April to a record number 29.5 million – showing that the Government's Plan For Jobs is working and the economy is recovering both nationally and here in Norwich. This the largest fall in unemployment since 1974.

Locally, there are 2,110 actual claimants in Norwich North, which was 3.8% of the population aged 16-64, which shows that Norwich is doing better than the equivalent UK claimant rate was 4.0%.

These statistics confirm that the Plan for Jobs is bringing economic security to workers, more trade for businesses, and greater prosperity to our city.

Alongside the £22 billion of support, getting people into work and affording them the security of a job is key for the Government to help families tackle global cost of living pressures.
