Grab your ‘flu and Covid-19 booster jab this autumn

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 29 September 2022 14:22

This autumn the NHS is encouraging everyone eligible for a ‘flu and Covid-19 booster to grab the jab when invited.

Lower levels of natural immunity to ‘flu are anticipated in communities this year, and research drawn from Australia’s recent winter, has seen ‘flu make a much earlier appearance than usual. This discovery has prompted the UK Government to prepare for an increase in ‘flu cases this winter, alongside an expected rise in Covid-19 cases.

‘Flu places an enormous burden on the NHS and our local healthcare systems, and your participation in taking the vaccine when prompted, can certainly help alleviate those pressures and reduce the impact and spread of serious illness in our communities this winter.

Over 30 million people will be urged to take advantage of the autumn booster vaccine which is being offered free of charge to:

· Residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults

· Frontline health and social care workers

· All adults aged 50 years and over

· Persons aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group including pregnant women

· Persons aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression

· Persons aged 16 to 49 years who are carers

Eligible patients will be contacted by the NHS when it is time to book their booster.
