Government publishes GP appointments data

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 25 November 2022 09:32

As part of its commitment under the Plan for Patients, the Government has published its first-ever figures showing the details of GP appointments in October.

The detailed data enables patients to view performance by GP practice, showing exactly how many appointments each practice in England is delivering and how long people wait between booking an appointment and receiving one.

The headlines for the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board which includes Norwich, show that across 106 GP practices in the region:
  • There were 689,523 appointments in October, of which 91.1% were attended, and just under 5% were 'no-shows' - which means that disappointingly, a total of 31,376 appointments were lost in October.
  • Of those appointments attended, 76% were delivered face-to-face, and 18% were via video or 'phone calls.
  • 33% of appointments were booked and attended on the same-day, and 57% of patients were seen within 7 days, with 72% of patients seen within 14 days.
I welcome the first release of these figures which will help constituents make informed choices about their healthcare providers.
The benchmark for the Government's pledge that "patients who need an appointment with their GP practice within 2 weeks should get one, and that patients with urgent needs should be seen on the same day', has now been set.
