Global Recycling Day

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 18 March 2023 17:51

Protecting the environment is one of my key local priorities for North Norwich, which is why I support 'Global Recycling Day.'

We can all play our part in recycling correctly, to contribute towards helping preserve the planet.

Locally, it really helps if Norfolk residents dispose of waste in the right bin, saving tonnes of rubbish from contamination. Alongside this, many items can be separated for recycling across Norfolk's 20 recycling centres.

Also, the Government is working to make recycling easier, ensuring that there is a comprehensive, consistent service across England. That's helping to reduce confusion with recycling, ensuring that there is more recycled material in the products we buy and that the UK recycling industry grows. This will also be a significant step towards meeting the 25 Year Environment Plan commitment to eliminate avoidable waste by 2050 and contribute towards meeting recycling targets.

I am pleased that the Environment Act 2021 enables the Government to significantly change the way that we manage waste and take forward proposals from the Resources and Waste Strategy.  I was proud to support and vote for the Environment Act, which includes powers to create extended producer responsibility schemes,  introduce deposit return schemes, establish greater consistency in the recycling system and better control the export of plastic waste.

I want our environment left in a better state than we found it for future generations. I am confident that the Government's recycling measures will contribute towards reducing the amount of waste we produce, helping care for our environment. To find out more about what action I am taking both in Norwich and Westminster for this work, please visit: https://www.chloesmith.org.uk/myplan/environment
