Extra support to safeguard political impartiality in schools

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 17 February 2022 10:26

Today,  the Government has issued guidance to help teachers tackle sensitive issues, safeguarding political impartiality in the classroom whilst helping children to develop in an appropriate way.

No subject should be off-limits in the classroom, as long as it is treated in an age-appropriate way, with sensitivity and respect, and without promoting contested theories as fact.

That is why I welcome the guidance being introduced to help teachers tackle sensitive issues in a politically impartial way. By clarifying for schools their legal duties when discussing sensitive political issues, the Government are supporting teachers in their decision making about what they teach in the classroom.

This will help to appropriately teach children about political issues and differing views – an essential part of their education, helping them to develop their opinions and reach their full potential.

Locally, it was great to take part in the Student Voice meeting at Open Academy last week, where students have a regular opportunity to feedback to teachers about the subjects that they are taught.

Earlier this month, I also hosted a roundtable discussion for Headteachers in Norwich North with the Minister for the School System, Baroness Barran about the best way for local schools to work together to provide the best possible outcomes for our young people.
