Delivering a plan to tackle inflation and boost economic growth

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 17 November 2022 16:08

Today in the Autumn Statement the government has made tough but fair decisions to restore economic stability and tackle inflation. Inflation makes everyone poorer so it is right that the number one priority is to grip inflation.

I welcome the fact that there have been no headline tax increases. There is more money for schools and the NHS, which as MP for Norwich North are local priorities of mine. To achieve long-term, sustainable economic growth the announcements in this Autumn Budget have gripped inflation, balanced the books, and gets debt falling as a share of GDP.

Like many countries around the world, the UK is facing profound economic challenges – Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the Covid pandemic have the UK billions. The government spent over £400 billion supporting 14.5 million jobs during the pandemic. It is right that we start to pay that back now rather than leave future generations to pay the price.

This Conservative government is standing by the most vulnerable by uprating benefits in line with inflation and keeping the pensions triple lock.

Altogether, the Autumn Statement is strong way forward, focused on stability, growth and public services. This reflects the problems facing economies around the world, and rightly protects the most vulnerable. Constituents in Norwich and across country will benefit.
