Covid 19 Update: Free School Meals

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 18 June 2020 12:29

I know from parents, schools and volunteers how important school meals are.

During the period of school closures, support has continued to be provided to children eligible for free school meals while they have been at home. That is on top of comprehensive help to the most vulnerable throughout the pandemic, including food.

The Prime Minister is right to extend this through the summer in these unusual circumstances. There’s going to be a Covid Summer Food Fund which will help those families who need it during the six weeks of traditional school holiday.

I also think Marcus Rashford has done great work in bringing attention to this vital issue.

The Government will additionally deliver catch-up activities over the summer for pupils who have missed education because of the coronavirus. I have been in touch with the Department for Education and am told full details of this scheme will be announced shortly. There’s no doubt that what disadvantaged children in Norwich need most is to get back to the classroom for learning, play and much more - so I thank teachers locally for what they’ve done so far, and urge them to continue innovating to get all children back to school.

Finally, I attach a letter I’ve had from the Education Secretary which gives some more information on the extensive support this Government has provided.
