Council tax discount for opening second homes to Ukraine refugees

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 11 April 2022 14:40

Today new regulations to halve council tax for families who offer their second homes to Ukrainians fleeing conflict will come into force, supporting families to open up their second homes to those who need it the most.

It is important to recognise the more than 200,000 people nationally who have expressed an interest in hosting people from Ukraine for being willing to open up their homes to those in need and ensure no one is financially penalised for doing so.

That is why today the Government are introducing new laws to protect council tax discounts for hosts and to give those who offer second or empty homes in England to those fleeing Ukraine a 50 per cent council tax discount, ensuring they are not financially penalised for offering support.

Our country has a long and proud history of taking in people in need, and the Government are doing everything they can to support people across the UK to play their part in helping through our Homes to Ukraine scheme.

If you want to offer a home to people fleeing Ukraine,  you can become a sponsor as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme. To find out more, please visit: https://www.gov.uk/register-interest-homes-ukraine
