Chloe to chair GovKnow conference on procurement

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, will today chair GovKnow’s conference on procurement.

Bringing together delegates from across the public, private charity sectors, the event will consider how best to deliver value for money for taxpayers through improved efficiency in public sector procurement practices.  Chloe is a former Minister for public procurement.

Chloe intends to focus today on youth employment, and how procurement can be used to fulfil the Government's pledge to deliver 3 million apprenticeships, on top of the 2.4 million created for young people in the last Parliament.

Commenting on the strategy Chloe said:

“The state spends over £50 billion a year on procurement contracts. Having a clear commitment to apprenticeships as a requirement for major contracts will not only significantly boost apprenticeship numbers, but also help promote a culture of providing opportunities for young people and investing in your workforce.”

The National Audit Office recently estimated that for every pound of taxpayer investment in apprenticeships, the economy gets £18 back. In 2014 this amounted to £34 billion for the UK economy.
