Black lives matter: Vandalism

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 26 June 2020 14:30

Constituents have contacted me regarding Black Lives Matter protests and particularly vandalism.

First of all, I will say straight that I am very concerned by what happened to George Floyd in the US.  I have replied to many other constituents' concerns about how they believe race is still a matter of injustice in today's Britain, and I am sympathetic to that.  It is understandable why so many people want to make their voices heard at this moment.  I think it is important that I am honest as MP for Norwich North about what a range of people think in our area, and what my views are on the core issue.  That does not mean I support all of the aims of all protestors, and I think we should be very clear in calling out when important, legitimate concerns are damaged by the actions of some.

Turning to protests and vandalism, it's also the case that the UK has a proud tradition of peaceful protest which can be rightly upheld.  However, this should not be unsafe, or unlawful, or violent.

As regards social distancing and coronavirus, the Prime Minister and Home Secretary have made it very clear at the outset that the virus remains a threat and protesters should not gather in large groups.

Under no circumstances should protests become violent.  Attacks on the police or other people and criminal damage of any kind is absolutely unacceptable.  I am confident the justice system will hold the minority of protestors who engaged in public disorder to account.

The Prime Minister has been robust in his response and you can read that here: https://www.facebook.com/borisjohnson/posts/10157554013236317

I agree with him, and many of my constituents, that pulling down our heritage and history is not the right way to go.  We can be smarter than that.
