Aylsham Road Bus Lane

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 07 January 2022 18:43

It has always been really important to me to listen to local residents and businesses in Norwich North so I can help with issues that affect them.

I am campaigning on behalf of local shops on the Aylsham Road to have Norfolk County Council listen to their legitimate concerns about the introduction of the new bus lane and double yellow lines along a stretch of the road.

Hardworking businesses have contacted me, worried about the effect on their trade. If customers can’t easily pull in to these important roadside shops - like the Post Office, charity shops, food shops, funeral director and others - the shopkeepers face a worrying future. Many are particularly concerned about how elderly and disabled customers can get to these shops.

Today I had a street meeting with several business owners to hear first-hand from them. Residents are also giving their views, like many did on the other section of the bus route in Hellesdon.

I will be passing on all their feedback to Norfolk County Council and asking that the council listen and respond to their concerns and look for a common sense solution that makes best use of important investment funding. I have already been in touch with Norfolk County Council about this scheme and others because it’s vital that taxpayers’ money is well spent locally.

I support improvements to transport in our city, and have fought in Westminster to get funding for Norwich, but this shouldn’t be at the expense of good jobs and local shops.

If you have been affected, either positively or negatively by the bus lane changes on Aylsham Road or Cromer Road, please do email me at chloe@chloesmith.org.uk.

You can sign a petition against the changes at the Post Office, Aylsham Road.
