National Cancer Survivors Day

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 06 June 2023 09:28

Last weekend marked the 36th National Cancer Survivors Day.

Three years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was lucky to make a full recovery, thanks in no small part to the superb care of our NHS.

But the success of months of chemotherapy owes itself to something else, too; the extraordinary power of innovation.

Since that diagnosis, I’ve wanted to give something back.  Being asked to provide maternity cover for the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology is a powerful chance to help others.

I am one of millions of people in Britain who will be diagnosed with cancer over the course of their lives. And now, it’s part of my mission to make sure that millions more can recover to live happy, healthy lives.

That is why I was immensely proud last week to announce £650m in government support for our life sciences sector.

When I first realised there was a lump in my breast, I used this platform to encourage others to check for signs of cancer. If you find anything unusual, please call your GP straightaway.
