Chloe Smith, the MP for Norwich North, and Chair of the Norwich For Jobs project, has welcomed the announcement that firms will get a £1,000 bonus for every new trainee they take on.

As part of a traineeship initiative, which lasts from six weeks to six months, young people will receive maths, English and CV writing training as well as guidance about what to expect in the workplace, the Treasury said over the weekend.

The scheme is a £111 million package for the largest ever expansion of traineeships - incentivising businesses with a £1,000 bonus for every trainee they take on, so that as we continue our recovery from coronavirus young people have access to high quality training they need to thrive.

Norwich North MP Chloe Smith commented, “I strongly welcome these set of announcements from the Chancellor. Locally, we are ready to work with Norwich firms to take full advantage of this package through the Norwich for Jobs project which has brought together around 200 employers and to-date has helped over 2000 young people off benefits and into work. It is bringing together this collaboration between our young people and local employers with the government incentives that will ensure that we have plenty of opportunities for young people in Norwich.”

Norwich for Jobs has changed lives since 2013 by helping local young people aged 16 to 24 get into work. The project offers support to young people looking for work, employers looking to recruit and organisations that work with young people. Norwich for Jobs is a network of local employers, charities and organisations collaborating with the aim of getting young people the skills and experience they need to get into work.

The Chancellor will reveal further details in the economic update on Wednesday.

Chloe added:  “This is all about helping the country and our city move forward after the virus.  We want to not just bounce back, but bounce forward – stronger and better and more united than ever before.   Helping young people have hope and opportunity is crucial.”
