An update from Chloe

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 22 August 2019 11:51

This is a quick update for constituents on events at Westminster, although I remain on maternity leave until November.

I'm grateful to constituents who've been in touch whilst the new Prime Minister has taken office.  I've also been reaching out with a big constituency survey on local issues.

The new Government has set out its priorities, which I support:

  1. Getting Brexit done by 31st October, with a new deal for Britain
  2. Making sure Britain is prepared for 'no-deal', as the best way to get a good new deal
  3. Strengthening our NHS, by making sure the billions of pounds already committed gets to the frontline, plus a new cash injection
  4. Hiring 20,000 new police officers and giving them the power to keep our streets safe
  5. Properly funding our schools so that every child gets more guaranteed minimum funding, regardless of where they live
  6. Maintaining a strong economy to fund these public services that we all rely on.

I firmly know that our NHS, policing and schools are top priorities for my constituents and I am pleased that among the new PM's first announcements has been upgrades for three hospitals that serve us in Norfolk.

I supported Mr Johnson to be Conservative leader and Prime Minister because our country needs a figure who will be decisive and clear, getting Brexit done but so much more as well.  I believe our democracy needs his energy and enthusiasm from the top.

Regarding Brexit, I endorse this approach to Brexit because it delivers on the result of the referendum, and puts an end to uncertainty and delay.  You'll know from my many Brexit blogs that I want us to leave with a deal, and the Government’s desire to secure a good deal as we leave the European Union hasn't changed.  The new PM remains committed to achieving a good Brexit deal which can command the support of Parliament.  I have had assurances that the new Government is ready to get stuck into these negotiations with the greatest energy and determination and in a spirit of friendship but if the EU isn't, then we do still have to leave.  The Government is therefore making all necessary preparations to ensure we are ready in the event of a 'no-deal' exit.

Now is the time to come together as a country, get Brexit done, move on to making a success of our future relationship with the European Union and all our friends across Europe - and return to all the other things we want to do for our country and our community.

When I'm back from maternity leave I'll continue to provide regular updates for constituents on Brexit and other issues.  In the meantime, I've ensured my Norwich office is fully available to help constituents on my behalf, and I am using the new 'proxy voting' system to make our voice heard in Westminster on the most significant votes.

Finally, thank you to everyone who's kindly sent good wishes to me and my family - our new arrival is doing well!
