Update for Norwich North: Our Plan for jobs

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 09 July 2020 11:28

Yesterday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak set out the Government’s Plan for Jobs to spur the UK’s recovery from the Coronavirus outbreak.

I have always worked in Parliament and locally to back jobs. The new measures will ensure people in Norwich have the support they need to recover from this crisis.

I know from my work with young people in Norwich that they often bear the the brunt of any economic turmoil and they are at particular risk at this time. Employees aged under 25 were about two and a half times as likely to work in a sector that is now shut down as other employees.

My local campaign, Norwich for Jobs, has changed lives since 2013 by helping people aged 16 to 24 get into work. The project offers support to young people looking for work, employers looking to recruit and organisations that work with young people.

It is great news that a landmark Kickstart Scheme – a £2 billion fund - will create hundred of thousands of new jobs for young people at risk of long-term unemployment.

The Government is not just investing in new jobs. A new £111 million investment will triple the scale of traineeships in 2020-21 and an extra £32 million for the National Careers Service will mean they can provide tailored jobs advice to a quarter of a million more young people.

Another £17 million of funding was announced to almost triple the number of sector-based work academy placements in 2020-21.

The Conservative manifesto I stood on promised opportunity for all and this is what we are delivering. The Plan for Jobs will help us here in Norwich and across the country bounce back from coronavirus and secure the UK’s economic recovery
