The cost of pharmaceutical drugs to the NHS

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 25 October 2017 10:13

Some constituents have contacted me about the cost of pharmaceutical drugs to the NHS. I fully appreciate their concerns and I would like to assure all my constituents that the Government is committed to paying a fair price for medicines used in the NHS.  I am of the view that where companies exploit the NHS by charging higher prices, this money cannot be spent elsewhere on patient care.

You may be interested to know that the Government has recently legislated to ensure that high prices of generic medicines can be better controlled. This action reflects the Government’s determination to ensure that no pharmaceutical company can charge unjustifiably high prices for medicines used in the NHS.

However, I have passed the issue raised by constituents who have contacted me onto the Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to ask him to comment on the views you have raised. I will write back to constituents and post again on my website again once a reply has been received.
