Reporting back: education update

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 14 August 2019 10:48

Providing the best for Norwich children is part of Chloe’s 6 priorities for Norwich North. In her absence whilst she is on maternity leave, her office is pleased to share the following information with you.

It is important to pay tribute to teachers across Norwich North for the work they do. Their hard work means that more children are gaining the skills and knowledge they need to get on in life.

As well as the hard work of teachers, there are a number of Government reforms which have provided students with greater opportunities. These include the 4,811 more children in Norwich North who are now in schools rated good or outstanding, compared with 2010, and 1.9 million more children are attending good or outstanding schools nationally. 85% of schools are now rated good or outstanding, up from 68% in 2010.

Since 2012 literacy levels have been rising since the introduction of the Government’s phonics screening check, meaning 163,000 more children are mastering the fundamental skills they need to succeed. In 2012, 58% of 6-year olds reached the expected level in reading nationally, compared with 82% last year.

The Government’s reforms to the curriculum mean more pupils are studying the core, academic subjects they need to get on and disadvantaged students are more likely to go to university than ever before. At the same time, reforms to apprenticeships mean that young people have quality, vocational options as they await their GCSE and A-Level results. This has seen 3.8 million people start apprenticeships between 2010-11 and 2017-18, while the Government continues to improve the quality of apprenticeships with over 400 new apprenticeship standards.

While many local young people will now be awaiting exam results, it is important to remember that it is the hard work of teachers, combined with this Government’s reforms, which means pupils have more options than ever before – whatever path they choose to take.
