Queens Speech 2016 UK set to become world leader in digital economy

In my last blog post I talked about the need to put social mobility at the heart of Government strategy, so that anyone, regardless of background, can participate fully in our economy and society.

That economy though is one which is becoming increasingly digital. I welcome therefore the measures announced in the Queen’s speech to ensure our country becomes a world leader in this area.

The Digital Economy Bill will build a world-class digital infrastructure, delivering on our manifesto commitment to universal broadband, empowering consumers and giving everyone access to online services. The Bill will reform the way the Government uses data, meaning better public services here in Norwich. Better protection of intellectual property will support new digital start-ups, a key part of our growing economy.

Last autumn I welcomed Digital Minister Baroness Neville-Rolfe to Norwich for a tech round-table, hosted by Proxama at White Space. This provided an ideal opportunity to update the Government on the latest developments, talent and excellence in our tech community here in East Anglia. Sync the City, the three day marathon of start-up building held annually in Norwich, is just one example of what can be achieved.

I also used this as an opportunity to raise the issues we much be addressed going forward, chief of which was infrastructure, so I welcome the plan announced this for every household to have access to high speed broadband.

Going forward, we have reason to be excited about what our local economy will look like in the coming decades.

East Anglia is already a growing hub for digital technology. Norwich is officially a 'Tech City'. A fine title which acknowledges the digital employment of over 14,000. 3 million pounds is being invested in Norwich's growing creative digital industries, including £1.5 million for the Digital Centre for Innovation at Norwich University of the Arts.
