Chloe Smith to help fledgling democracy in Myanmar with UN

Author: Chloe Smith, Updated: 14 February 2016 08:42

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, is heading to Myanmar (Burma) tomorrow to help support newly elected MPs there in the new Parliament after the historic election last autumn.

Chloe has been asked by the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to contribute to a week-long programme of induction training for the new Myanmar Parliament, along with MPs from Australia, Hong Kong, Timor L'Este, Korea, Bhutan, Malaysia and other countries.

This follows from Chloe's representation of Britain at the Inter-Parliamentary Union's young Parliamentarian summit in Geneva (2014); and her work with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in training politicians in Eastern Europe (2008) and East Africa (2014).

Chloe comments:

"I am incredibly proud to be asked to help the new Parliament in this country that is just turning the corner into democracy. I will be discussing how MPs do constituency work and national work and emphasising accountability and representation."
