Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North has lent her support to the CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), the Anti-Suicide Campaign.

The campaign seeks to bring awareness to the issue that suicide is the biggest single killer of young men aged 20-45. A new anti-suicide campaign is being launched by CALM  (Campaign Against Living Miserably) to help to draw attention to this fact and to get men to talk about their problems.

The Charity has commissioned some alarming research from YouGov which shows that 42 per cent of men in the UK have considered suicide while one in nine (13 per cent) refused to answer. In 2014 three out of four (76 per cent) of all suicides were men some 4,623. Most worryingly the research showed that four in 10 of those who contemplated suicide never thought about talking to anyone about it for a variety of reasons including, shame (32 per cent), not wanting to sound weak (25 per cent) and not wanting to worry anyone (49 per cent).

Chloe is supporting CALM’s attempts to secure a debate in Parliament on 19th November, International Men’s Day about this difficult subject.

Chloe comments: “Suicide is all too often an under-discussed issue. The research produced by CALM shows that this is a very real issue affecting young men. I support and encourage this Parliamentary debate and encourage others to discuss and support this issue.”
