Chloe's Local Campaigns

You can see my views here on a number of important issues in the constituency.

If I can help by supporting a local issue, or investigating a problem, get in touch.

Chloe calls for local government accountability

Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North, has launched a consultation on local government services.

As part of this consultation, Chloe is asking residents of the Norwich North constituency to go to www.tellchloe.com and fill out a short survey. The questions ask for opinions on a range of different local services and are designed to find out how well local councils are performing.

Constituents who are unable to access the website should write to Chloe at 157 Aylsham Road, Norwich NR3 2AD or call her office on 01603 414756 to discuss the local services that are important to them.

During the Norwich North by-election, Chloe promised to organise an annual survey of local people on the performance of local councils to hold them to account on the services they provide, such as recycling, bus services, road maintenance and housing. The text of Chloe's contract can be found at www.chloesmith.org.uk/contract

Commenting on the survey, Chloe said:

"People appreciate local services when they are run well. We have several councils locally which broadly work well, and yet other councils underperform year on year. I look forward to getting some new data on people's real-life experiences of local services. I hope this will be particularly constructive at this time of year as councils deliberate on their budgets. I will ensure that people's concerns are heard after the survey and I will press for action wherever possible."

Chloe will close the survey and collate results at the end of February.

Speeding across the constituency

Chloe has called for a review of anti-speeding measures in hotspots across the constituency. She has already been successful in getting roads reviewed.

She will continue to work with local communities and councils to campaign for changes where necessary.

Commenting on the consultation, Chloe said:

"I get many letters about speeding issues across Norwich North. I will be pressing for action on the top spots in north Norwich. People do want to be safe in the streets, and with a steep rise in vehicles over ten years, without yet a major road around the north of the city to help relieve congestion, this is a serious issue."

Silver Road Day Centre

As seen in the local press, Chloe Smith, Member of Parliament for Norwich North, has been helping constituents to gather a petition against the potential closure of the Silver Road Day Centre. The Day Centre is a well-loved facility for many elderly people in the area and many of them have expressed concern at its possible loss.

On Saturday, 24th October, Chloe joined local residents on Silver Road, knocking on doors to raise awareness of the issue.

Chloe will also be visiting the Day Centre and meeting with Norfolk County Council regarding the matter in the coming week.

Commenting on the campaign, Chloe said: "I wanted to meet residents and hear their views. I have seen the strength of local feeling.

"I do appreciate that the County Council is facing cost pressures, not least from the national public spending situation. It is also having to follow national government's move to 'personalised' services for older people. I am only concerned that good, well-used local facilities could get lost in the midst of this. I will be taking it up with the County Council and asking what options are available."

Save Our Walk-In Centre

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North and long-standing local campaigner, has welcomed the news that there could be a new future for the health centre at Dussindale. She will be attending an exhibition at the site of the former Dussindale Walk-In Centre to discuss proposals for the opening of another facility in its place. She has also be met with Julie Garbutt, Chief Executive of NHS Norfolk, and representatives from Norfolk County Council to go over the proposals.

Chloe has welcomed the news that there is to be a new future for the health centre at Dussindale and is pleased that local residents will be given the chance to express their views about what that future will be.

The centre closed on July 20th, despite a massive community campaign supported by Chloe. She took a 5,600 strong petition all the way to the Department for Health in London, but the Government still didn't listen. Now there is fresh hope for the vacated centre after the Conservative County Council proposed locating a children's Sure Start centre there, which could sit alongside NHS family health services.

Chloe reports: 'I still believe the right decision would have been to save the Walk-In Centre and I still oppose its closure. However I am certain that the original community campaign had a big impact. I believe that we helped to convince the NHS that healthcare provision in Dussindale and the east of the city is needed, and that the location is a good one for people to get to easily.'

Chloe added: 'There are a large number of young families living locally so it is very important that children's health services are provided. I have always supported Sure Start schemes across Norwich and I welcome the suggestion of basing a new project, with a focus on health visitors in particular, at Dussindale. It is vital that Dussindale Health Centre continues to play a major role in meeting the needs of the local community.'

Northern Bypass for Norwich

Chloe supports plans to build the 'Northern Distributor Road' around the north of the city.

'People can get quickly around the south of Norwich- which helps residents and businesses in the city and across the county- but on the north side we have congestion on our main roads without a similar bypass. I am therefore campaigning to get the road built.'

Supporting Council Tenants

Like most Norwich residents, Chloe was outraged at the scandal of Norwich City Council allowing its own employees to jump the queue and live in social housing.

Chloe has been campaigning passionately from the start to see the officials involved brought to justice. 'If that means we have to go right to the top of the council, so be it,' says Chloe. 'I am disgusted at the way the Council has treated the pensioners in Greyhound Opening sheltered housing, who have given so much for our country. I'm glad to see that the officials involved have been sacked.'

Chloe remains determined to fight the corner of residents. She has, for example, recently met residents across the city who are waiting for double glazing in their properties.

Chloe will continue to press for action. Although the council has now finally begun to install the double glaxzing in some areas, the process seems to have stalled.

Chloe says: 'This is unaccepable. After the Greyhound Opening Scandal it is important that the council shows that it is making residents its priority.'

Chloe wants to hear your views: she will organise a meeting twice a year for representatives of local residents' associations, leaseholders' groups, housing associations, our local councils and other connected groups to discuss local housing problems and to see how she can work with them to address these problems.

Keep Broadland District Council

Chloe Smith MP is campaigning against Labour's plans to place Broadland parishes on the urban fringe of Norwich into a new 'Greater Norwich Council.'

Commenting on the plans, Chloe says: 'This is a lovely part of the world, but we need to be careful that we keep it that way. Norwich truly is a fine city, and I love living there in a great community. But Norwich and Broadland have different needs and their own identities.

'That's why I oppose Labour's plans to abolish our local councils and swallow parts of Broadland up in a 'Greater Norwich Council.'

'As your MP, I will fight to protect our local identity and stand up for all of our communities.'

How are our local councils doing?

Chloe has promised to organise an annual survey of local people on the performance of the local councils to hold them to account on the services they provide, such as recycling, bus services, road maintenance and housing.

Chloe calls for action on City War Memorial

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, has said she will keep the pressure on the City Council to carry out the long-awaited renovation of Norwich's war memorial.

'It's a disgrace that the memorial has been closed to the public for almost five years,' said Chloe, who attended the Veterans' Day Parade in the city in June. 'I know that proposals have been drawn up on what to do with the memorial, and the city council has now approved the planning application. But the necessary funding remains to be signed off, and we certainly don't want to keep on waiting.

'As your MP, I will work with the council to make sure that this work goes ahead. We owe it to the brave people who fought and died for us to have a lasting tribute, and it's also a great opportunity to redevelop that part of the city.'

'Love Your Local'

Chloe has thrown her support behind the Norwich Evening News's campaign to 'Love Your Local'. Chloe has written to all publicans in the area and heard many worries about business in difficult times, including from the heads of the Licensed Victuallers' Association and the British Institute of Innkeepers.

Chloe says: 'High taxes, red tape and extreme offers in supermarkets, on top of the downturn, make these tough times for our Norwich pubs. But we should all be inspired by the many pubs locally that are finding imaginative new ways to keep business going and keep up their place in local life.'
